The Manokwari Agriculture Service proposes the development of 1,000 hectares of soybean fields

The Department of Agriculture and Food Security of Manokwari Regency, West Papua Province proposed the development of 1,000 hectares of soybean fields in response to 'homework' asked by the Minister of Agriculture Syahrul Yasin Limpo during a visit to Manokwari, Tuesday (25/10).

Head of the Manokwari Agriculture and Food Security Service Kukuh Saptoyudo in Manokwari, Friday, stated that Manokwari Regency so far still has less than 200 hectares of soybean farming land on the Wapramasi mainland which consists of the Districts of Warmare, Prafi, Masni and Sidey.

"Our soybean planting center in Manokwari is located at SP 11 but that, the land does not reach 200 hectares. We have only proposed to increase it to 1,000 hectares later," said Kukuh.

He said the plan to increase soybean land was carried out by making soybeans as intercrops from rice.

"So the paddy fields are planted with soybeans after the harvest. Soybeans are harvested after that they are planted with rice and after the rice is harvested again, they are planted with corn," he explained.

Thus the total land area of 1,000 hectares will be evenly distributed, corn and soybeans while rice will use 1,200 hectares of land. The planting will be carried out on the Wapramasi mainland.

While in 2023, Kukuh stated that there would be a proposal to create new rice fields. It's just that he could not confirm the amount of land proposed because it is still in the form of a plan.

Kukuh said that his party would only hold a joint meeting centered in the city of Sorong regarding the increase in the area of paddy fields which is planned to be carried out in the near future with the Directorate General of Agricultural Infrastructure and Facilities, Ministry of Agriculture of the Republic of Indonesia.

"But it will not be land for intercropping crops such as soybeans and corn. That is indeed the focus for paddy fields," said Kukuh.

While visiting Manokwari, Minister of Agriculture Syahrul Yasin Limpo asked West Papua Province to develop at least 100 thousand hectares of soybean land.

According to him, this soybean commodity is important throughout Indonesia because the consumption of processed soybeans such as tofu, tempeh and soy sauce is consumed by the whole community.

But so far, he said, most of the demand for soybeans has come through imports, with the amount reaching 98 percent.
